Gerald Francis Hoefer, 82, of Manchester, died at his home on Tuesday, December 1, 2009. He was born on August 23, 1927, at New Vienna, Iowa, the son of Arthur and Alma (Boge) Hoefer. He was raised in the area and educated at New Vienna Catholic School.
Gerald served honorably in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. While he was in the service, he was united in marriage on March 26, 1951, to Verna Mae Goedken in Worthington, Iowa. Together they lived in Shariton, Illinois and Delhi until they bought the farm near Masonville. Gerald farmed and was a seed corn and feed salesman until he retired and moved to Manchester in 1988.
Gerald was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church. He loved his wife, children and grandchildren, farming and the Cubs. Gerald enjoyed reminiscing with old friends.
Survivors include his wife, Verna Mae Hoefer of Manchester; his seven children, Larry (Sherry) Hoefer of Strawberry Point, Shirley (Ken) Knipper of Petersburg, Dennis (Janet) Hoefer of Quasqueton, Joyce (Collin) Whitney of Winthrop, Dave (Michelle) Hoefer of Masonville, Ron (Sue) Hoefer of Masonville, and Carol (Jeff) Harper of Manchester; 19 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; two step grandchildren; and 2 step great-grandchildren; one sister, Darlene (Charles) Fischer of Manchester; two brothers, Charles Hoefer of Cedar Rapids and Art (Karen) Hoefer of Swisher; and a sister-in-law, Linda Hoefer of Cedar Rapids.
Gerald was preceded in death by his parents; and one brother, Lyle Hoefer.
