Francis John Klein, 79, of Manchester, Iowa, died on Sunday, December 13, 2009, following a lengthy illness. He was born April 23, 1930, in Raeville, Nebraska, the son of Frank and Mary (Krogmann) Klein. The family moved to Strawberry Point and then the Manchester area. He attended St. Xavier’s School in Manchester.

Francis served honorably in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. In 1957 he was united in marriage to Helen McEnany at St. John’s Catholic Church in Coggon. Together they farmed north of Manchester. Seven children were born to this union. Francis retired from farming in 1993.

Francis was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Manchester, and the Manchester American Legion Post #45. He was an avid sports fan of the Chicago Cubs, Iowa Hawkeyes, West Delaware Hawks, and the Cedar Rapids Prairie Hawks.

Survivors include his children, Dave (Tracy) Klein of Manchester, Tom (Barb) Klein of Cedar Rapids, Greg (Carolyn) Klein of Manchester, Deb Klein (Brent Waltz) of Cedar Rapids, Kenneth (Diane) Klein of Manchester and Karen (Pat) Phillips of Manchester; 16 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; one brother, Joseph (Viola) Klein of Manchester; and two sisters, Hilda Koch of Richland Center, Wisconsin, and Helen Kuncl of Prague, Nebraska; two sisters-in-law, Rosemary Klein of Manchester and Leone Anderson of Carrollton, Texas.

Francis was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Helen in 1993; an infant son, Richard Allen; two brothers, Richard and Cletus; and two sisters, Mildred Larson and Vera Cole.
