Virgil U. Engelken, 83, of Manchester, Iowa, died on Sunday February 7, 2010, at St. Luke’s Hospital in Cedar Rapids. He was born on April 27, 1926, at Farley, the son of Frank and Elizabeth (Hennen) Engelken. He was raised in the area and received his education in Bankston and Dubuque County Schools, and graduated from Bankston High School. Virgil served in the U.S. Army in 1945, where he served in Caserta, Italy, as a car driver at 204 Car Company. His assignment was to drive U.S. Officials and U.S.O. personnel. Following his military service, he was employed for Hickory Valley Creamery.
On November 23, 1948, Virgil was united in marriage to Margaret “Margie” Tegeler at St. Francis Basilica in Dyersville. Three children were born to this union. Together they started farming near Ryan in 1949 and in 1950 they purchased a farm 3 miles east of Manchester where they farmed for forty years. After retirement they enjoyed traveling and spending time at their winter home in Florida.
Survivors include his wife, Margaret “Margie” Engelken of Manchester; two children, Steven (Helen) Engelken of Dubuque, and Pam (Martin) Boeckenstedt of Hills; two grandsons, Kurt (Becki) Engelken of Florida; and Ted Engelken of Dubuque; one granddaughter, Katie Boeckenstedt of Hills; and two great-granddaughters, Kaitlyn and Karli Engelken of Florida.
Virgil was preceded in death by a daughter, Sheila Engelken; his parents, Frank and Elizabeth Engelken; one brother, Francis Engelken; and one sister, Esther Millard.
